Taiyuan (CNS) -- The company in north China's Shanxi Province that contaminated a major regional water source with the chemical aniline has been ordered to close and make safety upgrades, a senior provincial official said Tuesday.
Li Xiaopeng, acting governor of the province, said at an urgent conference that the Tianji Coal Chemical Industry Group must not resume production until it met specific requirements.
Li said that great importance should be attached to production safety and urged companies to make improvements. He stressed severe punishments for violators.
Contamination by the chemical leak has affected drinking water supplies downstream in Handan, Hebei province, which has a population of more than 1 million people.
Another Shanxi company, Yangquan Coal Industry Co. Ltd, has also been ordered to stop production following a gas explosion in one of its mines on Monday.
