Beijing (CNS) -- Japanese Ambassador to China Masato Kitera said on Saturday that the young people of the two countries should improve face-to-face communication and get a true picture of each other.
Kitera was making his first public appearance since taking office in Beijing in late December, addressing a joint coming-of-age ceremony for more than 200 Japanese and Chinese college students.
Kitera congratulated the people who have reached the age of 20 in his speech and said he understood their parents' gladness, as his daughter is also the same age.
China-Japan ties are in a tough situation, and the young people of the two countries should improve communication, learn from each other and step forward together, he said.
Kitera recalled his visit to China 20 years ago as a member of the team traveling with Japan's Emperor and Empress. Good communication between two countries' diplomatic personnel helped the visit, he said.
The coming-of-age ceremony, traditional in Japan, is to encourage youths to shoulder more responsibilities and fulfill their dreams. Such joint ceremonies have been held many times in Beijing.
