Washington (CNS) -- China added $7.9 billion worth of Treasury securities in October, according to statistics released Monday by the U.S. Treasury Department.
Remaining the U.S.'s largest creditor, China had a total holding of more than $1.16 trillion in October, slightly lower than it had at the beginning of the year, the data showed.
Japan, the second-largest holder, bought $5.2 billion in Treasuries in October, increasing its total U.S. debt holdings to $1.13 trillion. Japan has increased its holdings for seven consecutive months, causing the gap between China and Japan to narrow to $26.8 billion.
Total foreign holdings of U.S. debt rose to $5.48 trillion in October. The slowdown in purchases suggests that investors have been affected by the shadow of a U.S. "fiscal cliff", analysts said.
