Beijing(CNS)-- The death toll caused by seasonal influenza in China has been much higher than expected, according to a report released Tuesday by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC).
The report selected data from three cities in north China and five cities in south China, and found that between 2003 and 2008, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases caused by seasonal influenza had claimed the lives of more people than had previously been thought.
The CDC declined to provide specific figures, but said that more than half of the excess deaths were caused by the influenza B virus.
The high mortality rate reflects the unawareness of the public towards the danger of the illness, said the center.
