Tokyo (CNS) -- The number of Chinese tourists to Japan shrunk to 71,000 people in October, a drop of 33.1 percent, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization on Tuesday.
A total of 12,845 people have canceled hotel reservations near Mount Fuji since the Japanese government's "purchase" of the Diaoyu Islands on Sept. 11, according to a survey of the Mount Fuji area.
There have also been far fewer reservations by Chinese tourists in November.
Japan's retail industry has also been hard hit, as sales of products popular among Chinese visitors at duty-free stores in Japan have dropped sharply since Sept. 11.
Viewed as high-value tourists in Japan, Chinese visiting between April and June spent an average of 170,000 yen ($2,069) on shopping.
