Hong Kong (CNS) -- Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has overtaken Fifth Avenue of Manhattan as the world's most expensive shopping district, according to a report released Wednesday by Cushman & Wakefield, a privately owned commercial real estate broker and consultant.
Average rent for one square foot in Causeway Bay rose 34.9 percent to 2,630 U.S. dollars a year, overtaking Fifth Avenue's 2,500 U.S. dollars. Avenue des Champs-Elysees of Paris also saw a substantial rise to 1,129 U.S. dollars, surpassing Ginza in Tokyo.
The existing brands are still expanding and new brands also want to carve a niche in this limited area, leading to the rental rise, said John Strachan, director of the global retail service of Cushman & Wakefield.
Shopping districts in Hong Kong also occupy the top three of the Asia-Pacific's most expensive shopping districts, according to the report.
