Beijing (CNS) -- Sales volume of Tmall, Taobao's online shopping platform, totaled 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) by noon on Singles Day, which falls on Nov. 11 every year in China, according to insiders on Sunday.
E-commerce giants such as Taobao, Yihaodian and Dangdang all offered online sales promotions on the day. Tmall held a 50-percent-off sale and took in 250 million yuan ($40 million) within ten minutes past midnight on Sunday.
To make sure businesses ran smoothly, 800,000 delivery men were allocated for the shopping spree, according to the China Express Association.
Singles Day gets its name from the date's digits 11-11, which look like four bare sticks and sound like the Chinese word "guanggun," or "bachelor."
