Toronto (CNS) -- Chinese has become the second-largest foreign language spoken among immigrants in Canada behind Punjabi, according to the 2011 Census Report released Wednesday by Statistics Canada.
More than 5.8 million Canadians spoke two or more languages at home in 2011, 17.5 percent of the total population and 1.3 million more than in 2010, said the report which focused on about 200 languages.
Of those 5.8 million, most spoke English in addition to an immigrant language. The most common immigrant language was Punjabi, spoken by 460,000 individuals. The number of Punjabi speakers and others that spoke a closely related language such as Urdu amounted to 1,180,000.
A total of 1,113,000 people spoke Cantonese, Mandarin or other Chinese tongues. In Toronto the most widely-spoken foreign language was Cantonese.
