Guangzhou (CNS) -- The southern city of Guangzhou issued a draft regulation Saturday and called for a ban on plastic surgery for people under 18 accept for medical reasons.
The city also launched a website focused on protecting minors, where it is appealing to the public to help revise the draft.
There are no laws or regulations prohibiting cosmetic surgery for minors on the Chinese mainland, and Guangzhou would like to be the first to do it, said Yang Jianguang, a professor at the Law School of Sun Yat-sen University.
An increasing number of minors are encouraged by advertising and popular TV shows to have surgery, said Yang, so it is necessary to make laws to protect their physical and mental health.
