Qitai (CNS) -- After a decade of effort, a comprehensive shelterbelt has been built on the southeastern edge of the Junggar Basin, according to the Qitai County Bureau of Forestry in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on Monday.
The county has planted 49,300 hectares of forest and taken overall afforestation measures against 326,000 hectares of desert, the bureau said.
The tree belt has an east-west length of 65 kilometers and a north-south width of three to five kilometers, said the bureau.
The rate of forest coverage has increased to 7.45 percent, up from 5.83 percent in 2005, it added.
