Beijing (CNS) -- About 320,000 mixed couples comprised of people from the mainland and Taiwan have gotten married, and the number of such marriages continues to grow by 10,000 to 20,000 each year, Dou Yupei, vice minister of civil affairs, said Tuesday.
Dou is head of the newly-launched Cross-Straits Marriage and Family Association, the first organization dedicated to providing counseling services for cross-Straits couples.
The establishment of the association is thanks to solid support from the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Dou said.
People-to-people communications and exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan were resumed in 1987, and the number of cross-Strait marriages increased, said Dou.
