Nanyang (CNS) -- The second phase of the water and land conservation plan was initiated for the Danjiangkou Reservoir area and the upper reaches of the Yangtze River on July 28, absorbing an investment of 2.6 billion yuan.
Some 14,500 square kilometers have been improved ecologically since 2007 with the implementation of phase one of the conservation project for the surrounding the reservoir, at a price tag of 3.45 billion yuan.
In the first phase, soil and water loss has been effectively stemmed and source pollution reduced so that farmers now have better conditions for their agricultural activities, said Liao Chunyan, an official from the Commission of the Yangtze River Water Conservancy.
The Danjiangkou is a multi-purpose reservoir in Hubei province. Created by the Danjiangkou Dam, it serves as a water supply for the region as well as irrigation, electricity generation and flood control purposes. It was constructed in 1958, and at the time was one the largest reservoirs in Asia.
