Washington D.C. (CNS) -- U.S. Congress members are fuming that the American red, white and blue uniforms their national sports heroes will be wearing in the coming London Olympics are made-in-China products.
Soon after the "national flag" naval style uniform designed by Ralph Lauren made its debut on July 10, it was discovered to have a "Made in China" tag.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid slammed the U.S. Olympic Committee Thursday saying officials "should burn" them, following reports complaining China has already taken gold from America by manufacturing what Team USA will wear during the opening ceremonies, according to the Fox News .
"[If] all that they have to wear is nothing but a singlet with USA on it painted by hand, that's what they should wear. We have people in the textile industry who are desperate for jobs," Reid said.
"There is no compelling reason why all of the uniforms cannot be made here on U.S. soil at better quality for the same price," Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. wrote along with Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y. to Lawrence Probst III, chairman of the USOC.
The USOC responded to the cost argument with the statement: "The U.S. Olympic team is privately funded and we're grateful for the support of our sponsors. We're proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company."
Lauren left a message along with photos of the uniform on his Facebook page, saying he was "proud to unveil the official Opening Ceremony parade uniforms for the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams."
