Liuzhou (CNS) -- They may not be man-eaters, but they are man-biters and they live in the deeps of the Liujiang River. The Liuzhou City government is encouraging its citizens to go fishing and awards them 1,000 yuan for each piranha they catch.
Early this month a citizen surnamed Zhang was attacked by three of the ferocious fish when he was bathing his dog in the shallows of the river bank, and he managed to catch the one that bit his palm. Local aquatic experts confirmed it was a type of piranha.
On July 9, the city government organized fishermen to set up trapping nets of over ten thousand meters in length baited with meat, but not a single piranha was found or any awards issued for catching the dangerous creature until the afternoon of July 10 and beyond.
The piranha is an omnivorous freshwater fish that originally inhabited South American rivers. They are known for their sharp teeth and a voracious appetite for flesh.
