Yuxi (CNS) -- The Chengjiang Fossil Site in Yunnan Province was added Sunday to the World Heritage List at the 36th World Heritage Committee meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia.
It is the first ancient Chinese fossil site to make the list, and the fourth world heritage in Yunnan.
Located at Maotian Mountain in Chengjiang County, the site was first discovered by paleontologist Hou Xianguang in 1984. Rare fossils of about 200 species have been found there, along with a world-renowned collection from the early Cambrian period.
Yuxi will use the opportunity to become a paleontological research base and increase tourism, said Kong Xianggeng, a Chengjiang official.
