Shanghai (CNS) -- Shanghai is adopting a new elder care mode. Relatively young seniors take care of the more elderly "companions" in the same nursing institute or community, explained official Xue Feng at the Shanghai Aging Career Development Center, Monday.
Within the year, at least 20,000 companion care-givers will be selected for 100,000 elderly seniors in need. The target care group includes elders over 80 years old and those who live alone.
Their younger peers are recruited as volunteers, required to complete a training program, and then assigned to visit, chat with, and organize activities.
By the end of 2011, Shanghai will have 629,200 people over 80, 18.1 percent of its whole population will be over 60; and 223,600 aged people will be living alone.
The average life span of Shanghai residents has reached 83.
