Yanbian (CNS) -- A wild Amur tiger appeared recently at Changbai Mountain in Jilin Province and was photographed by infrared camera, the local forestry department said Thursday.
The endangered Amur tiger is the largest sub-species of tiger and primarily found in southeastern Russia and northern China. At present, there are only about 20 wild Amur tigers in China.
Last March the School of Life Sciences at Peking University and the Forestry Bureau of Wangqing County set up more than 100 sets of far-infrared cameras in two forest areas to photograph wild animals.
Forestry bureau staff found the images of the tiger on June 12. The photos show an adult Amur leisurely passing by the camera on the morning of April 4 at an altitude of 837 meters.
Experts say the population of Amur tigers is growing in north China, and that the country's efforts to protect endangered species have begun to work.
