Shenzhen (CNS) -- The Shenzhen customs office announced on Tuesday that a vessel intercepted in its administrative waters was attempting to smuggle in 60 containers carrying 1,800 tons of frozen foodstuffs worth about 60 million yuan (US$9.42 million) if legally imported, the tax value would have been 12 million yuan (US$ 1.88 million).
Five suspects involved in the city's biggest frozen freight smuggling case have been arrested. They claimed the iron vessel and its 18 crew members were sailing off the Chinese coast from Hong Kong, but in fact were steering the illicit frozen freight towards Chaozhou, Guangdong.
The authority spent seven days making an inventory of the goods – beef, chicken wings, pork tripe and seven other categories of frozen goods from the U.S., Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.
