Beijing (CNS) -- China will start imposing environmental charges on the disposal of electronic appliances and products from July 1, an official with the Ministry of Finance said on Wednesday.
The plan targets producers and import agents of five categories of home appliances, including TV sets (13 yuan a piece), refrigerators (12 yuan), washing machines (7 yuan), air conditioners (7 yuan) and microcomputers (10 yuan). Exports are not included.
Those taking eco-friendly measures or using recyclable materials will be charged less.
China disposes of tens of millions of electronic products in the five categories every year, not to mention a large amount of mobile phones, duplicators, printers and fax machines. It has become the largest e-waste producer only after the U.S., according to a UNEP 2010 report.
