    Cambrian marine fossils discovered

Pingxiang (CNS) -- Archaeologists have excavated a site of Cambrian marine oryctocoenose in Shangli Township, Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province. These beds of fossilized mollusks where the flesh as well as bones are preserved as a whole, remain a mystery of science. This particular oryctocoenose is rich in shells, seaweed and fish fossils.

A local middle school teacher reported his coincident discovery of some uniquely shaped stones by Baihe Village to the local cultural relic authority several days ago.

Experts speculate that the site might have been a bay some 500 million years ago, and pushed up into a mountain formation during ages when movements in the Earth's crust were common and violent.

The finding is invaluable to studies on the ancient geology, climate variation, and paleontology of the region, said expert Liu Minhua.
