    Shanghai studies driver-free metro

    CNS (Shanghai) -- The city's metro line company is studying a driver-free metro system, their vice president Shao Weizong, confirmed onMay 9.

    Shanghai Shentong Metro Group operates the city's metro network via its four subsidiaries.

    Shao said the feasibility of using an unmanned metro system is expected to be fully reviewed by the end of this year. He added that line 10 which started operation in 2010 was originally designed to accommodate the driver-free mode.

    The city's first metro line started operation in the 1990's and has developed 11 lines to date. It delivered 2.101 billion rides in 2011, the making it the fifth busiest metro system in the world.
