No industrial gelatin in products: Zhejiang authority

Hangzhou (CNS) -- Responding to speculation that some solid yogurt products may contain industrial gelatin, the quality control authority of Zhejiang Province says that no such inedible component has been found in dairy products made by local enterprises.

An employee of CCTV released a post on his microblog on Monday, saying: "Text message from an investigative reporter: don't eat solid yogurt or jelly, the inside story is horrible." Some web users commented the yogurt may contain industrial gelatin, an illegal component. Later, the post was deleted.

"Gelatin is a legal food additive and can be used in certain proportions specified by regulations," confirmed Shen Yiqing, an official from the Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technology Supervision, adding that the 22 local diary producers under their supervision have tested clean for industrial gelatin.

A reporter from CNS visited supermarkets in Hangzhou, and found some producers clearly list "gelatin" in the ingredients, while others use the vague expression "stabilizer."

There are related reports that many diary producers have come forward and stated they have never used industrial gelatin. The head of a giant diary enterprise expressed his hope that the behaviors of some individual companies will not taint the whole industry.
