Hundred children suffer from lead poisoning, S China

Shaoguan (CNS) -- The number of children found to be suffering from lead poisoning has increased sharply in Putang township of Renhua county, south China's Guangdong Province.

By Saturday, lead beyond safe limits had been detected in 32 more children, bringing the number of victims to 96 so far.

The county government has distributed 120 special dietary packages to counteract blood lead poisoning to families of victims.

The cause has not been traced yet. Local health and environmental protection offices have been urged to investigate possible sources and take care of the victims.
