China’s top building to grow taller

Wuhan (CNS) -- The 606-meter Greenland Center under construction in Wuhan, originally slated to become China's second tallest and the world's third tallest structure, has raised the bar for itself and plans to top the 632-meter Shanghai Center , taking the skyscraper championship for all of China.

The news was confirmed by the Wuhan representative of the Greenland Group on Sunday, but details of the plan are still under discussion.

The new extra-high complex, with 119 floors above ground and six beneath, will tower over the banks of the Yangtze River by 2017.

Professor Xiao De at the School of Business, Hubei University, was not surprised at the change of plan. It is easy to attribute the scale change to the developer's thirst for more profit, he observed, but in fact rapid development has simply increased the demand for local office space. Several other super structures are already in the works for the Hankou riverside commercial area.
