Port of Fangcheng (CNS) -- The first nuclear power plant serving the Port of Fangcheng in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is under construction and is expected to be put into use by 2014, said Geng Pingsheng, Chief Engineer for the project contractor.
According to its builders the prospective new power station, located in the coastal area on the southwest brink of Qinzhou Basin, is geographically free from earthquake and tsunami attacks.
The Fukushima accident has made the whole world cautious about nuclear projects, but it seems to be an irreversible trend and many parts of the globe are focusing on developing safe as well as efficient nuclear power as part of meeting the energy demand, said the senior engineer.
Special attention will be paid to environmental protection, for which sake 17 banyan trees at least 100 years old, and one that has survived more than 500 years, were conserved on the construction site. It is hoped the trees will continue to witness more centuries of China's commitment to green nuclear power.
