    China's new pollution battlefronts

    Beijing (CNS) – A document on the regulation of pollutant emissions prepared as part of the 12th Five-year Plan (2011-2015) was offered at the 7th China Environmental Protection Conference on December 20 in Beijing. China's Environmental Protection Minister Zhou Shengxian signed it, along with 31 provincial officials and a few repesentatives of state-run companies such as Sinopec and PetroChina.

    A total of 1,184 sewage treatment plants capable of dealing with 45.7 million tons of polluted water were written into the document, to be constructed by their signees during the next five years. The papermaking industry and steel plants are among the ranks of projects also lined up for action.

    Provinces participating in the plan to reduce pollutant emissions were asked to take their own measures to control the volume. The central government will assess the results every year.
