Microblogging a growing player in public security

Beijing (CNS) -- The number of "official" Weibo accounts has surpassed 12,000, covering administrations from all mainland provinces, said Chen Tong, vice executive chairman of Sina.com, at the Fourth UK-China Internet Roundtable on Thursday.

And out of all 300 million microblog accounts in China, two-thirds are registered on Weibo.com under Sina.com, added Chen, citing statistics.

Among all official accounts, public security offices take up the largest percentage and provide the most services, such as public order, traffic police and fire control, he said.

Since the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau opened its Weibo account "Ping'an Beijing" (literally "Peaceful Beijing") in 2010, netizens have commented over 180,000 times.

According to Chen, Weibo has brought about two significant forms of progress to governance. One is the way governments release information, since reports of disasters and emergencies often appear on Weibo within an hour.

The other comes from the public. Chen said Weibo has encouraged public participation in social affairs, citing an example in January in which netizens successfully initiated a rescue of child beggars by taking photos of suspicious activity and uploading them right away.

The advent of this new social network will trigger revolutionary changes in communication and promote social development at various levels, said Chen.
