Xi'an (CNS) -- The No.6 Qin Emperor Tomb located in Fengxiang County of Baoji, Shaanxi Province, was bombed in June, leaving a 19-meter hole, according to local authorities on Wednesday.

However, the ancient tomb and the relics within, including the main vault belonging to the Qin family cemetery, withstood the explosion.

Before the Qin feudal state (778BC-207BC) united all six contemporary states, the capital was located in Yongcheng, close to the present town and new district of Fengxiang, with an existing site of around 50 square kilometers.

In 1976, local villagers found a special layer filled with rammed earth, where the cultural relic office discovered and explored the Qin Emperor Cemetery.

Research by 1986 confirmed that the entire cemetery was 12 kilometers long from east to west and 3 kilometers wide from south to north, and contained 49 tombs. During the 294-year history of Yongcheng as the capital, 19 Qin emperors rested there.

Authorities say an investigation into the bombing is underway, although the tomb raiders are still at large.
