Xiamen (CNS) -- Xiamen resident Fang Weidong spent 13 days cycling 1,123 km around Taiwan Island and returned to Xiamen at twilight on the 25th.
At first, Fang planned to cycle to Hangzhou, but the newly relaxed policy for mainland tourists changed his mind.
"After learning of my plan, Mr. Hong at E-da World Company immediately told his friend Zhang Wenxian, manager at the Hangyou Travel Agency."
Zhang and his friends designed a cycling route and made the accommodation arrangements for Fang. Zhang's colleague surnamed Yu, who is already over 50 years old, accompanied Zhang on part of the journey.
Zhang was deeply impressed by the hospitable Taiwanese people. "I met some other cyclers on the way. They would turn to me and encourage me warmly."
The most amazing part of his journey was the natural and cultural views along the way. He stayed in a private farm in Jiayi, alongside the lake in a house by the Sun Moon Lake.
The most touching section for Fang was on the Suhua Highway. "Many local friends suggested that I not take the risk. I just couldn't resist the temptation to keep going after I was so deeply touched by Taroko Gorge. So I decided to take the challenge of the Suhua Highway part."
He passed through dark tunnels, narrowly escaping racing heavy trucks. "When I finally arrived at the destination, I burst into tears."
Fulfilling his dream, Fang said he will publish a book of his feelings and thoughts along with over 2,000 pictures during the journey.
On the prospect of more mainland cyclers coming to Taiwan, Fang was quite optimistic. The Hangyou Travel Agency is contacting local bicycle companies for vehicles to better facilitate cycling fans from across the strait.
Fang didn't visit Mount Morrison and Ali Mountain due to various limitations. "I have been thinking of another cycling journey on a motor bike in several days."
