Shijiazhuang (CNS)-–The Shijiazhuang Bureau of Cultural Relics revealed on Thursday that an archeological dig in Zhangyang Village's ancient tombs, the site of the ancient Kingdom of Zhongshan, had made a breakthrough by finishing ten Warring States Period (475 BC-221 BC) tombs.

In the latest phase of the archeological exploration, 70 pieces of pottery, bronze, iron ware, as well as jade ware have been found. The most historic achievement comes from the possible find of a Weichi game (also known as Go Chess) in tomb No.10.

The square copper object drew the attention of the field archeologists due to its appearance, which looks like a Weiqi game with even red grids on the surface and seven small-sized stones next to it.

The local authority has stated that this has been a one of the biggest breakthroughs in this site's archeological dig since 1976.

The discovery, if confirmed, would put the invention time of Weiqi at least 200 or 300 years earlier, which is previously believed to be in the Han Dynasty (206BC-220BC).
