Beijing(CNS)--The China Three Gorges Corporation released its first corporate social responsibility report Sunday, stating that the company's Three Gorges Project is the backbone of flood control in the Yangtze River, according to the China News Service.
The Three Gorges Dam is capable of preventing floods at different levels, according to Chen Fei, general manager of the company. He said that even the worst flooding in 100 years would not undermine the flood storage capacity of the Three Gorges Reservoir, which can guarantee the successful discharge of floodwater from the Jingjiang reach of the lower Yangtze River.
The Three Gorges Dam, together with dike projects in the middle and lower Yangtze River areas, can also guard the region from the worst flooding in 100 years. Furthermore, the dam, dike projects and flood-diversion area in Jingjiang's Yangtze River reach can prevent the entire region from the worst flooding in 1,000 years, according to Chen.
If the worst flooding in 10,000 years were to happen, the Three Gorges Project is sure to be safe, added Chen.
The company's report illustrated that the dam held back more than 918 billion cubic feet (26 billion cubic meters) of water last year, helping to control flooding and storing water that helped alleviate drought.
The company also said the dam has proven its worth by helping boost the country's supply of clean energy, claiming it has helped with poverty alleviation and earthquake relief.
