Chongqing (CNS)--Heavy rain on Monday has helped ease the dramatic drought in southern parts of Chongqing Municipality, southwestern China, but has, on the other hand, flooded other parts of the city, according to the local Flood Control and Drought Relief Bureau.
The downpours started at 8:00 am June 13 and ended at 8:00 am the next day. The highest precipitation level reached 104.2 millimeters, said the municipal Meteorological and Hydrological Observatory Service.
However, some severe drought-affected areas still did not receive effective precipitation, with water reservoirs remaining un-replenished. About 223,000 residents and 131,900 livestock are still facing a water shortage.
While torrential rain drenched some regions, it also flooded six towns and counties, affecting 118,700 residents and 156,300 mu (10,420 hectares) of corps, and causing a direct economic loss of almost 55.53 million yuan ($8.6 million). About 120 houses collapsed but no casualties were reported.
Local forecasters predicted that the city will experience other downpours in the next three days especially at night. The Flood Control and Drought Relief Bureau have already strengthened the flood control and water reservation facilities to prepare for the rainy day.
