Beijing (CNS)--China is dedicated to further improving the current food safety monitoring system so as to guarantee the public a healthier and safer eating environment, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Wednesday.
In a newly published circular on deepening the economic system reform, the government has explicitly stated that improving the food system will be a focus for the NDRC in 2011.
Building up the food security coordination mechanism in local governments, enhancing the local law enforcement system, and strengthening the food security reaction mechanism will be the major issues to be addressed.
"Food safety has a great impact on public health and directly influences the country’s economic development and social stability," said Lian Qihua, a senior official from the NDRC.
"Food security, in some sense, can also reflect the image of a country and its government. But there are flaws in China's food safety system," added Lian.
In recent years, food security scandals have taken place with a high frequency. The everyday supervision and scandal prevention system are weak, which affects the entire monitoring system.
In addition to improving the country's food safety monitoring system, investing abroad is also a key issue for the NDRC. "The foreign economic and political environment is complicated and unpredictable in many ways. Therefore, making a foreign investment mechanism will help to ensure safer investment abroad," said Lian.
