The first China-Central Asia freight train from Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality officially started service on Sunday, a representative of its operator -- China Railway Chengdu Group Co said, noting that this route is a key development in enhancing the city's international logistics network.
Departing via the Khorgas Port in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the train will travel through Kazakhstan and is expected to reach Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, in about 12 days, according to the company.
It will run with a fixed frequency of two departures per month, covering approximately 4,700 kilometers. This service cuts the shipping time for Chongqing companies exporting to Central Asia by more than 30 percent, providing significant support for local manufacturers to expand their market share in Central Asia.
The inaugural train service carries 55 containers of goods, with a total value exceeding 14 million yuan ($1.92 million) and a weight of more than 2,000 tons, all from a local company - Wankai New Materials Co.
"Once the train service operates regularly, our shipping time for exports to Uzbekistan and other Central Asian regions will be shortened by seven days, and transportation costs are expected to be reduced by nearly 4 million yuan annually," said a representative of Wankai New Materials Co, China Railway Chengdu Group Co reported.
In recent years, trade between Chongqing and the five Central Asian countries, particularly Kazakhstan, has grown significantly, with electromechanical products comprising a major share of this trade.
