Alibaba Group Holding filed a lawsuit on Wednesday in Shanghai, charging that a shop owner on its e-commerce platform taobao.com had sold fake cat food.
Alibaba claimed compensation of 2.67 million yuan ($386,900) and demanded that the shop owner apologize in public. This is not the first time that Alibaba has accused a vendor on its platform of selling counterfeit products. At the beginning of this year, the group sued a shop selling fake watches and claimed compensation of 1.4 million yuan.
The group's founder Jack Ma Yun said on Sina Weibo on Tuesday that regulators should strictly fight fakes as if it was a crackdown on drunk-driving.
