South Korean electronics giant Samsung settled the first court case filed against its problematic Note 7 smartphone in Shanghai after it apologized to the plaintiff and agreed to pay 30,000 yuan ($4,361.73) in compensation, media reports said on Wednesday.
Representatives from Samsung told a court in Shanghai that they would not contest the plaintiff's claims and had requested an out-of-court settlement, jfdaily.com reported.
The plaintiff, a man surnamed Yao, sued Samsung after his Note 7 caught fire and burned his bed sheets. He claimed that the company had provided false information about the safety of the Note 7 smartphones, and he sought compensation of 20,000 yuan, according to the report.
Samsung had reassured consumers in China that the Note 7 devices sold in the country used different batteries and would not cause problems even after reports of safety issues in the country.
