China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS) recently implemented a new mechanism designed to adjust salaries of public servants and public-sector workers. Hu Xiaoyi, vice minister of the MOHRSS, has himself confirmed the approval of this new mechanism but refrained from mentioning specific pay changes.

Given the recent unification plan of China's public and private pension funds, many have been awaiting news of pay changes for civil servants. Prior to the ministry's announcement, observers had widely speculated on the possibility of wage hikes for government employees.

According to the results of an online survey, about 60 percent of respondents support a wage increase, while 30 percent expressed disapproval. Of course, those on both sides of the issue can make solid claims to support their views.

On the plus side, the government's wage increase plan can introduce a greater degree of transparency over the earnings of public servants. This will also promote wage equality within government agencies and help safeguard the rights and interests of State sector workers.
