China received more than 164,300 new software copyright registrations in 2013, a year-on-year increase of 18 percent, according to figures revealed on Tuesday.

According to a report drafted by the Copyright Protection Center of China, eastern regions accounted for 65.83 percent of last year's total registrations. Meanwhile, the central and western regions saw year-on-year increases of 25.46 and 33.06 percent respectively.

The figures show that Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong Province are among the regions with the most developed software industries.

Registrations for cloud computing software in 2013 totaled 3,017, a year-on-year increase of 55 percent, while registrations related to the Internet of things reached 4,388, up 70.54 percent year on year.

China began to register software copyrights in 1992 in a bid to protect the rights of software owners.
