Chinese shares closed mixed on the first trading day of 2013, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.35 percent, or 7.86 points, to end at 2,276.99 points on Friday.
The Shenzhen Component Index slid 0.22 percent, or 20.42 points, to finish at 9,096.07 points.
