Delegates: moving ahead with economic reform

With the conclusion of 18th Party Congress, a key question is the future direction of China's economy. Our reporter Guan Xin speaks with delegates about their views on necessary changes to China's current growth model.

China is in a crucial stage of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects. The 18th Party Congress has set the guiding principles.

To transform the economic growth model, delegates say enterprises need to take their cue from the Scientific Outlook on Development, and emphasize technology and innovation.

Dai Lin, CPC delegate said, "In many countries, innovation is led by companies. For example, in the US and Germany, many important innovations are created by enterprises, such as the invention of transistors. I think Chinese enterprises should build on their innovation capacity, especially for private SMEs."

Balancing rural-urban development is also key to sustainable development. The way forward is to boost modernization and infrastructure in rural areas, and more importantly, to improve the livelihood of the people there.

Yang Xingyou, CPC delegate, said, "Insufficient consumption, especially in rural areas, is a long-standing restraint on China's economic development. The majority of the population is in rural areas, but the bigger portion of the economy is in the cities. The major consumption power is also in cities. The reality forces us to make extra efforts to improve the income of rural residents."

Delegates also stressed the role the private economy has played in China's economic and social development. They say the private economy needs market access and governnment support if it's to grow.

Zhou Haijiang, CPC delegate, said, "China is increasingly open and supportive of private enterprises since the reform and opening up. We hope the government will continue to deepen reform and opening up, giving private enterprises a fair chance to compete in the market."

Delegates say China should build on its achievements and forge ahead to tackle new challenges. The new leadership needs to push through necessary reforms to secure China's economic future.
