US considers 2nd round of investigations into Huawei, ZTE

Along with the UK, the United States's House Intelligence Committee is considering launching a second investigation into Chinese telecom technology firms Huawei and ZTE.

This comes after pressure from the US's largest telecom-equipment company, Cisco Systems and other tech companies. According to the US House Intelligence Committee, the reason for the second round of investigation is that the committee received many phone calls from current and former employees. They say the company may own more suspicious equipment threatening US national security.

Earlier this week, the Committee released a draft report suggesting American firms avoid doing business with Huawei and ZTE, saying they posed a national security threat to the US. Some experts say accusing Chinese enterprises of posing a national security risk is a common means of cracking down on Chinese companies.

In 2007 and 2008, Huawei was stopped from purchasing US network equipment manufacturers for security reasons.

Meanwhile, for the same reason, in September this year, US President Barack Obama blocked China's Sany Group from purchasing wind farms near a US military base. Sany is one of China's biggest makers of heavy machinery.
