Spirulina product tests slam rumors

(Ecns.cn) -- The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) released on this early morning the eagerly-awaited results of a series of tests on brands of a dietary supplement made from spirulina that reportedly contained excessive levels of lead. The Guangzhou Daily went on to say only one product failed the test.

An investigative report by Xinhua News Agency revealed on Wednesday that excessive amounts of lead were detected in six of the eight brands on the market. Green A, a Yunnan based brand; Conthealthy, a US brand were among those accused of exceeding the acceptable limit by 20 to 820 percent. However, these companies have all been cleared by SFDA tests.

Only one brand, the Fujian based Xingfulai, failed the test; it showed excessive amounts of both lead and arsenic.

Xinhua's exposure has raised public concern and many drug stores were urged to remove related products off their shelves. Despite the official announcement in support of most spirulina products, the public has yet to fully recover its confidence.

Both Green A and the Guangdong based By-healthy have expressed their appreciation on their corporate Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, for the official clearance that came just in time to avert a crisis.
