(Ecns.cn)--Last year, about 730,000 pieces of imported clothing worth of US$12.2 million failed to pass the spot checks conducted by China's quality watchdogs, according to the People's Daily citing the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) Friday.

Quality problems resulted in about 861 batches of clothes including baby dresses, pajamas and swim wear to be turned back or directly destroyed, and most of the substandard items dark in color.

Inspection results indicate the fiber content of some of the rejected imports did not match the description on the label or contained excessive levels of harmful chemical formaldehyde. Most originated in Spain, Italy, Turkey, South Korea, India and other countries.

Since January 1st 2011, AQSIQ required spot checks be conducted on some types of imported clothes, after which H&M's sweaters were found to have quality problems. Boni woolen sweaters, a type of Captaino sweater, and baby clothes and wool products by Folli Follie, Zara and Anna Sui also failed local quality inspections.
