Marking its fifth anniversary this year, the four-day Poly Auction Autumn Auction is scheduled to kick off in Hong Kong on Saturday.
Going under the hammer will be a number of rare paintings by big-name modern artists from home and abroad, such as Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010) and renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, according to a statement from the organizer.
Paintings set to be unveiled in the Modern and Contemporary Art section, which highlights Eastern and Western masterpieces with estimated sale prices of more than HK$ 30 million ($3,842,000) each, include Untitled by U.S. artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88), a monumental figure in Western contemporary art; abstract oil painting 24.3.59-31.12.59, which famous Chinese-French painter Zao Wou-ki (1921-2013) created in 1959 during his "inner easternization" period; and Wu Guanzhong's 1975 landscape-themed oil painting The Great Fall of Tanzania, which previously sold for 30.8 million yuan at the Beijing Poly International Auction in 2009.
In addition to this, a series of other paintings by Wu depicting landscapes in Southwest China's Sichuan Province and Guilin, a tourist resort known for its mountains and water views in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will also be included at the auction.
Aside from works from the deceased Chinese masters, works by a number of frequently heard names whose works have pulled record sales over the past two decades, including Zeng Fanzhi and Zhang Xiaogang, will also hit the auction block, with estimated sales prices exceeding HK$2 million.
Moreover, works to be auctioned also include a collection from Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist known for her use of bright colors and dotted patterns in her works, including her Mt. FUJI (QPWE).
