Lionsgate's "The Hitman's Bodyguard" continued to lead the gloomy North American box office for the second weekend in a row, bringing in an estimated 10.05 million U.S. dollars.

This weekend's catastrophic overall tally in North American box office is the worst in at least three years, winding up at around 65 million U.S. dollars.

"With one week left in the season, a knockout punch by the Mayweather-McGregor fight on Saturday night delivered another punch to the summer box office bottom line with the first time since the weekend of September 5, 2014 for a three-day frame to earn less than 70 million U.S. dollars," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.

"Despite the painfully obvious acknowledgment that this has been a rough box office summer, there is thankfully help on the way via some potential winners in September and more importantly a fourth quarter that boasts many a promising indie film and a handful of potential blockbusters that will hopefully get the box office back on track again," he added.

"The Hitman's Bodyguard" is an action comedy film directed by Patrick Hughes. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek, and follows a bodyguard who is hired to protect a hitman who has to testify at the International Court of Justice. In comScore/Screen Engine's PostTrak audience survey, the film remains a hit with audiences who gave it 4 out of a possible 5 stars this weekend. It took in more than 39.6 million U.S dollars in total after 10 days in theaters in North America.

Warner Bros.' "Annabelle: Creation" landed in the second place with an estimated 7.35 million U.S. dollars in its third weekend and has earned more than 77.8 million after 17 days in theaters in North America.

The Weinstein Company's animated adventure tale "Leap" opened this weekend in the third place with an estimated 5.015 million U.S. dollars.

Murder mystery thriller film "Wind River", another film distributed by the Weinstein Company, was fourth with an estimated 4.41 million U.S. dollars in its fourth weekend. Bleecker Street's action comedy "Logan Lucky" finished fifth with an estimated 4.3 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend.
