The new U.S. ambassador to China Terry Branstad said on Wednesday Washington needs to work with Beijing on pressing issues like the nuclear and missile activities of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and continue with the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Branstad made the remarks during his first media appearance outside his residence in Beijing.
He said the U.S. is willing to cooperate with China on several important issues. Expanding trade to increase economic opportunities for people of both countries is also on his agenda.
"I am really looking forward to travelling throughout China and getting to enjoy the food and the sights, and most importantly the people," the 70-year-old ambassador said.
The new ambassador and his family arrived in Beijing on Tuesday. He resigned as the governor of Iowa last month to assume his new diplomatic position in China.
