Chinese New Year celebrations will get underway in Sydney's Darling Harbour on Friday, with the largest ever Chinese lanterns display in Australia, set to take centre stage.

The festival celebrating the Year of the Rooster, is the first global event to bring in the Chinese New Year, with visitors to be met with the sight of an extraordinary five-storey replica of the gate to Beijing's Forbidden City, along with a two storey high Ming Vase lantern as the centrepiece.

Around 150,000 festival goers are expected to visit the three-day event, beginning with an official ceremony on Friday, January 20, attended by Chinese business leaders, senior Australian government officials and senior Chinese representatives headed up by China's Consul General Gu Xiaojie.
