Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday expressed appreciation to China over implementation of important consensuses during a meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Buhari spoke highly of the cooperation between Nigeria and China, while praising the latter's efforts to implement the important consensuses reached at various meetings and the outcome of the Johannesburg summit of the Forum On China-Africa Cooperation.

He also highlighted the Nigerian reaffirmation of its commitment to the One-China policy.

A joint statement issued after Wang's meeting earlier with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama noted the One-China policy is at the core of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Wang, having delivered a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Buhari, also expressed appreciation over Nigeria's stance. The One-China policy sustains the political foundation of China-Nigeria cooperation, he said.

Speaking during the meeting at the presidential palace in Abuja, Buhari also hoped that more Chinese companies would contribute to the economic development in the West African country.

Wang said China will help Nigeria achieve its economic diversification plan by developing infrastructure, including railway and power projects, and enhance agricultural technology and education, among others.

Nigeria is one of the five African countries that Wang visited in keeping with China's long diplomatic tradition of making Africa its first overseas destination each year.

Wang kicked off the Africa trip on Friday for visits to Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania, the Republic of Congo, and Nigeria.
