Nanjing, China's eastern Jiangsu, will follow the footsteps of Xiamen and Hangzhou by implementing purchasing restrictions on the housing market. The measures are meant to cool down the intense price rise.
As of September 26, 2016, families residing in Nanjing who own two or more homes will be unable to purchase any newly built properties. According to a government-issued statement published Monday, restrictions facing non-locals appear more severe. Those who do not have a Nanjing residency, but own one or more residence, can no longer buy any newly built or second-hand properties.
Consequently, numerous couples filed for divorce the following morning. The boom in divorcees is seen as a move to bypass the new restrictions on the number of homes a resident can purchase. No longer married, a husband and wife can separately purchase a residence.
