The number of people nationwide who traveled during this year's Mid-Autumn Festival was 3.25 times higher than last year. Shanghai placed first among all inbound and outbound travelers.
Shanghai Railway Bureau registered 5.33 million travelers over the three-day holiday, a rise of 10 percent from 2015.
Over 300,000 people exited and entered various ports of Shanghai, a rise of 8.5 percent, with Shanghai Pudong International Airport accounting for 270,000.
Many local workers applied for their annual leave three days prior to the festival, which fell on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, to pool an eight-day holiday.
As far as inbound tourism, Japan and South Korea made up more than half of foreign tourists visiting China over the holiday.
